Simultaneous screenings for the broadcast of Private Violence on October 20th.

Private Violence shines a bright light on the public costs of “private” violence. Through the eyes of two survivors – Deanna Walters, a mother who seeks justice for the crimes committed against her at the hands of her estranged husband, and Kit Gruelle, an advocate who seeks justice for all women – we bear witness to the complicated and complex realities of intimate partner violence. Their experiences challenge entrenched and misleading assumptions, providing a lens into a world that is largely invisible; a world we have locked behind closed doors with our silence, our laws, and our lack of understanding.

HBO will broadcast Private Violence on October 20, 2014, during Domestic Violence Prevention Month, and the Private Violence team is working together with HBO to organize a national, simultaneous viewing on premiere night. The film premiered at Sundance, screened at the True/False Film Festival (True Life Fund recipient), Dallas International Film Festival (winner, Silver Heart Award), the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival (winner, Human Rights Award), DOXA and Documentary Edge in New Zealand. It had its international premiere at Hot Docs in Toronto and opened the Human Rights Watch Film Festival in New York City.

Each committed house party will receive a digital packet of resources to help them organize their house party and facilitate follow-up discussion.
