General Statement of Duties:
Provide case management and counseling services to victims of domestic violence and their children, to include crisis intervention, intake services, individual counseling, advocacy, and answering the crisis line. Ability to handle immediate crisis situations and work with diverse populations. Responsible for sole coverage and security of the shelter during the overnight hours.

Duties and Responsibilities:
These may not include all duties and responsibilities. Others may be added or subtracted at the discretion of the supervisor as needs arise.

o Provides crisis intervention, screening and assessment services to victims of domestic violence, completes intake with victims coming in for residential services.
o Provides advocacy services as needed; may act as a liaison between local agencies and clients on an emergency basis; computes child abuse reports when necessary according to mandatory law.
o Provides exiting services to clients as needed.
o Maintain complete client files, including standard forms and progress notes, records all clients’ contacts, prepares statistical tallies on a monthly basis. Maintains confidentiality within the team and within the limits as perceived by law.
o Resolves issues among clients utilizing mediation skills.
o Responsible for proper safety precautions and security procedures throughout the shift, including functioning of the shelter alarm systems.
o Ability to answer the 24-hour crisis line and handle immediate crisis situations.
o Trauma-informed trained
o Sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of population served

Community Work
o Develops awareness of community resources available for referral purposes.
o May do speaking engagements as needed and work schedule permits.
o Participants in the agency activities and special events as needed.
o Strong knowledge of local housing resources
• Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Operational knowledge of counseling and crisis intervention methods.
• Basic knowledge of domestic violence and effects on the family.
• Ability to exercise the basic skills of a counselor, i.e., good listening skills, supportive, empathic, ability to start where the client is, etc.
• Ability to develop a relationship with clients; ability to be sensitive to client needs.
• Ability to utilize basic case-planning skills, including goal setting and exiting services planning.
• Understanding of team concept and ability to work well within a team.
• Ability to maintain some of the working relationships with fellow workers, police, and other agency personnel.
• Ability to organize and prioritize aspects of work and to follow through on all work assigned.
• Ability to readily acquire skills through on-the-job training and/or other educational opportunities.
• Ability to act and react in stressful or threatening situations with effective and appropriate crisis intervention skills.
• Ability to assess information and make responsible decisions.
• Ability to communicate clearly in both verbal and written form.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work, Human Services or related field.

Experience: 1-2 years’ experience in a human service area with experience in counseling and crisis intervention including a working knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work Environment: Work is generally confined to a standard residential facility environment. The nature of the work may subject the employee to potentially threatening situations from time to time.
