Domestic violence nonprofit with decades of proven success is seeking a seasoned Executive Director to support our vision and provide leadership!

Gateway Domestic Violence Services provides a highly effective combination of shelter and comprehensive services to adults and children fleeing domestic violence. Gateway is the only 24/7 shelter available in the City of Aurora and Arapahoe County, offering emergency shelter and extended-stay care, together with a crisis line, counseling, and court advocacy.

Our service area includes the City of Aurora and Arapahoe County. Most of our clients are women and a third of those we serve are dependent children. Gateway serves LGBTQIA individuals as well. Most Gateway clients are low-income, earning at or below 30% of area median income.

The Executive Director is the top administrator responsible for the total growth strategy and operation of Gateway Domestic Violence Services, including its programs, staff, finances and managing three facilities.  The Executive Director recommends, develops and implements policy approved by the Board of Directors; establishes administrative procedures; manages the staff; plans, organizes, directs, coordinates and evaluates all agency services, integrating the activities in accordance with the Board of Director’s policies and procedures.  At present, Gateway has an operating budget of $2M and 25+ full-time employees.

The Executive Director is responsible for revenue generation, budget development and financial management, and oversees accounting functions.  This role is an advocate for the prevention of domestic violence and the protection of those threatened by it – a leader within the Gateway organization and in the community on domestic violence issues.
The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors to ensure alignment with the vision and strategic direction of Gateway, guides the organization’s leadership team and maximizes staff potential.


  • Providing leadership, strategy, inspiration, and accountability at all levels of the organization to achieve the mission and vision of Gateway.
  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors, executing the vision and strategic direction of Gateway; working with the leadership team in the development of resources and operational capacity to deliver.
  • Work with the Board to identify, recruit, orient, and retain a Board of Directors structured with outstanding leaders who are representative of and committed to the organization’s mission and values
  • Developing, calibrating, summarizing, and reporting on key performance indicators (KPIs) to Board and other stakeholders.
  • Identifying and developing talent within the organization to maximize effectiveness in conjunction with the mission of Gateway.
  • Engaging with staff, focusing their efforts in pursuing the mission of the organization.
  • Building and maintaining a positive, supportive, collaborative employee culture.
  • Collaborating with community social service agencies, local and state governmental agencies, professional organizations, and other organizations to promote understanding of family violence dynamics and to encourage them to include this information in their educational and training programs.
  • Listening, communicating, motivating, and building trust with diverse communities in the Denver region.
  • Sustaining and building relationships between Gateway and various local, regional, and national constituencies, including donors, government, private corporations, foundations, and other nonprofits.
  • Guiding planning, implementation, and evaluation of all programs to meet current needs of community, providing additional services and developing new approaches for expanding and changing needs.
  • Overseeing grant writing, prospect research, and reporting.
  • Overseeing the financial management of the organization including development efforts to achieve financial goals.
  • Ensuring implementation of best practices in all operational and programmatic aspects of Gateway, including finance, human resources/people experience, and business development.
  • Work with directors and managers to develop and operationalize equitable recruitment, hiring, evaluation, and compensation practices.
  • Provide overall leadership and identify strategies and content to support the programming of the organization.
  • Present Gateway’s vision, mission, and programs effectively to relevant stakeholders; serve as primary spokesperson to the media and oversee all public relations efforts.


  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience leading organizations and teams; nonprofit experience preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience working with a Board of Directors.
  • A minimum of three years of grant writing experience.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to communicate succinctly, both verbally and in writing to a broad range of audiences.
  • Thorough knowledge of business administration, including office practices, policy development, and procedures.
  • Demonstrated success in financial management, strategic planning, and implementation including experience in creating and managing a $1M+ annual budget.
  • A successful track record of fundraising through government grants, foundations, corporate donations programs, campaigns for individual and community giving.
    Proven success in developing staff.
  • Willingness to roll up their sleeves, understand the roles of all team members and step in as needed.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to support the work of the organization.

  • Expected annual salary range of $90,000 – $110,000.

  • Paid time off, 15 days per year, accruing at a rate of 4.6 hours per pay period.

  • Typical work schedule is Monday – Friday (9am – 5pm), with occasional evenings and weekends for events and other activities.
